Leading Through Grit, Grace, and Grit Again: A Reflection on Women in Small Business

October is National Women’s Small Business Month, and while that sounds like a reason to celebrate (and it is), for many women business owners, it’s also a moment to pause—somewhere between the tenth Zoom meeting, a coaching call, and a late-night email—to reflect on what it really takes to keep going.

Because here’s the truth: running a small business is not for the faint of heart.

It’s early mornings, late nights, and sometimes—if you’re lucky—a lukewarm cup of coffee between client calls. It’s managing a team that looks to you not just for direction, but for motivation and mentorship. It’s paying your people first—sometimes before you pay yourself—because that’s what true leadership does.

At Integral Recruiting Services, we’ve learned that leadership is as much about heart as it is about hustle. It’s about building a culture where people feel seen, supported, and inspired to grow—not just for the company, but for themselves. That means taking time to coach, to listen, and to celebrate small wins even on long days.

And let’s be honest—vacations are almost mythical in the small business world. (If you’ve seen that Progressive commercial where the owner tries to envision a vacation….) When you’re passionate about what you’ve built, the line between “on” and “off” the clock blurs. You don’t stop thinking about how to make it better, how to serve clients better, or how to help your team grow.

Women small business owners are among the toughest and most compassionate leaders you’ll meet. Yet, we still often have to work twice as hard to be seen as equals. That’s why this month matters—it’s not just about recognition; it’s about representation. It’s about honoring the women who build, create, employ, and lift others through sheer determination and belief.

Owning a business means taking risks—financially, emotionally, personally—but it also means creating something deeply meaningful: a community, a legacy, and a place where others can thrive.

So, as we celebrate Women’s Small Business Month, I raise my (cold) coffee mug to all the women out there doing the work—day in, day out—proving that leadership isn’t defined by titles or hours logged, but by courage, character, and commitment.

Here’s to the women who build businesses that build people.
Here’s to resilience.
Here’s to grit, grace, and grit again.
